The Oregon Bamboo Association (OBA) was formed in March 1998 to provide a closer-to-home center of activity for bamboo enthusiasts in central, southern and coastal Oregon as well as northern California. These are excellent bamboo growing regions and OBA members are testing many varieties for adaptation to the varied micro-climates.
A particular focus of the OBA is to develop and share knowledge of the potential for bamboo as a food and fiber crop in addition to its ornamental value in the nursery trade. Gib Cooper, OBA Secretary, organized Pacific Northwest Bamboo Agro-forestry Workshops in 1994 and 1997.
Quarterly meetings cover bamboo propagation and uses. The August meeting had a demonstration of paper making from bamboo. Pest control, primarily bamboo mites, is a major concern of the OBA. Meetings and newsletters always include Q & A sessions for beginners.
